With home improvement season fast approaching, many homeowners are beginning to shop around for roof replacement options. These days, the two most popular options are asphalt and fiberglass shingles. In some cases, you may hear people refer to asphalt shingles as organic shingles instead. Fiberglass and asphalt shingles are actually quite similar, but with a few important differences. In fact, both types of shingles use asphalt to protect your roof from the elements. The difference lies in the substrate that the asphalt is bound to.

Asphalt Shingles

This is the affordable, tried-and-true option. Asphalt shingles consist of sheets of heavy felt dipped in asphalt and topped with a gravel mixture for added protection. They’re cost-effective and relatively durable – some types can last up to 20 years. Due to their felt substrate, asphalt shingles are somewhat more flammable than fiberglass shingles, however.

Fiberglass Shingles

This is a more recent and somewhat more expensive option. In these shingles, the asphalt adheres to a mat of webbed fiberglass rather than a sheet of felt. As a result, they are quite fire resistant – ideal for hot climates that are prone to house and brush fires. Generally speaking, fiberglass shingles have longevity on their side as well. Some fiberglass shingles can last as long as 50 years.

They do have one important caveat. In cold climates, fiberglass shingles can become brittle and crack. Likewise, asphalt shingles are typically better-suited to areas that experience especially low temperatures in the winter.

These might be the most common roof replacement options, but they’re certainly not the only ones. Give us a call today to learn more about all the products and services we offer at Deegan Roofing, Siding & Gutter Company.
